What is LASIK Surgery?

Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a type of refractive eye surgery designed to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. This elective procedure is one of the most widely performed vision correction surgeries worldwide. The goal of LASIK is to reduce or even eliminate your need for prescription glasses and contact lenses. With the latest advancements in technology, surgeons can now perform bladeless, customized laser treatments tailored to each individual’s eyes.

Are You a Good Candidate for LASIK Surgery?

If you rely on glasses or contact lenses to see clearly, LASIK might sound like the perfect solution. However, not everyone is an ideal candidate. Before undergoing surgery, certain qualifications must be met, including:

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Stable Prescription: Your eyeglass or contact lens prescription should be stable for 2–3 years, with no significant vision changes for at least one year.
  • Medical & Eye Health: Candidates should not have active corneal disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or severe dry eye. Conditions such as diabetes, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis may also prevent safe results.
  • Pregnancy & Nursing: LASIK is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Because every patient is different, the best way to confirm eligibility is to schedule a consultation. During your visit, we’ll evaluate your vision, corneal health, and medical history to determine whether LASIK is right for you.

How LASIK Works?

Bladeless LASIK uses two specialized lasers to correct vision:

  1. The first laser creates a thin flap on the cornea, which is carefully lifted by the surgeon.
  2. The second laser reshapes the cornea to correct your prescription.
  3. The flap is then repositioned, where it heals naturally.

Most patients notice clearer vision as early as the next day. We’re proud to note that Dr. Nicole Lemanski is the first and only independent physician in the Capital Region certified to use these advanced laser systems, ensuring superior outcomes for our patients.

Recovery After LASIK

Following surgery, it is common to experience mild itching, burning, or blurred vision during the initial healing process. Pain is typically minimal, and most patients recover quickly. Your ophthalmologist will provide detailed post-operative instructions to ensure smooth recovery and answer any concerns before and after the procedure.
