What is LASIK Surgery?

Laser-Assisted- In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK), is a type of refractive surgery for the correction of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. It is a common elective surgery performed worldwide. The aim of the procedure is to reduce your dependence on prescription glasses and/or contact lenses. Recent advances in technology allow doctors to preform bladeless custom laser treatments for each individual.

Are You a Good Candidate for LASIK Surgery?

If you need corrective lenses, such as glasses or contacts, in order to see clearly, you have likely imagined what getting LASIK must be like. An important first step of the process is to determine whether you are a good candidate for the surgery. The LASIK procedure is not for everyone; there are certain qualifying characteristics you must meet before determining that you are eligible.

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old to qualify for LASIK.
  • Stability: Your eyeglass and contact lens prescription must be stable for 2-3 years and your vision must be stable for at least one year.
  • Medical History: LASIK candidates cannot have a history or findings of active corneal disease, dry eye, glaucoma, or macular degeneration, or other significant medical or eye problems. There are also certain conditions that do not react well to LASIK, such as diabetes, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Pregnancy: You cannot get LASIK if you are pregnant or nursing.

While every candidate is different, it’s generally important for patients to understand the limitations of the procedure as they start considering it. Schedule a consultation with our office; we will make a complete evaluation of your eyes, vision, and medical history to determine whether you are a good candidate.

How is LASIK Performed?

Bladeless LASIK uses two separate lasers lasers to correct your vision. The first laser creates a flap which is lifted by your physician and the second laser is then used to treat your glasses prescription. The flap is then re-positioned on your eye. In most instances, patients notice an improvement in their vision by the next day. We are proud to announce that Dr. Lemanski is the first and currently only independent physician in the Capital Region certified to use these systems for superior surgical outcomes.

After the Procedure

After the surgery, some itching or burning may be present as well as some blurred vision. There is generally very little pain associated with LASIK. Your doctor will review all of this prior to your surgery and give you detailed information about what to expect as well as how to make sure your recovery runs smoothly. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us.

If you are sick of wearing glasses, you might be a candidate for Lasik eye surgery. Please call us today to schedule an appointment with one of our ophthalmologists.
