I was unfortunate enough to have done something truly remarkably stupid the other day while visiting my sister, and got out of my truck and turned around right into a pine tree branch. This was of the horrible variety with very long, stiff needles. Apparently my aim was perfect and so I was rewarded with a corneal abrasion. Actually, as I found out later–two.

What to do? After getting back in my truck and wiping away the gush of fluid that continuously came from that eye, complete with copious amounts of snot from my nose, I decided it was a little more than a minor poke. I also wondered why such a horrible tree existed. Putting that aside, I had the wherewithal to get back out while ducking this time, and went into my sister’s house and had a beer. Why not?

She immediately noticed and was met with the above ridiculous story. “You should go to a doctor!”

Her prodding coupled with the fact that the pain was fairly intense and accompanied by everything that I looked at with my right eye exhibiting a double led me to seek the help of the able ophthalmologists at Mable Cheng’s office. By phone I was directed to come and see Dr. Nicole Lemanski for urgent care.

Upon my arrival there, assisted in my travels by my good eye, I was met by Dr. Lemanski and led to an examination room. The careful speed and professionalism and confidence that this young doctor exuded put me at ease. The next best thing were some numbing drops that she administered that made me soon realize “I’m cured!” However, I was then told this was not something I could routinely take to alleviate the pain unless I wanted a hole in my eye. Fair enough.

The rest of the exam went equally smooth and was relatively painless. Anytime Dr. Lemanski was about to do something that would be uncomfortable she prepared me for it, and it was always less uncomfortable than I expected. Probably due to her skill. Some cleaning, lights in my eye while I looked at the doctor’s ear, various drops, look here and there, a neat “eyelid flip”–stuff like that–then I was handed a script and was walked out. The whole experience felt friendly and caring, and I left impressed with her proficiency.

Just two days later and following doc’s orders, my eye is almost completely better.

I have nothing but honest praise for Dr. Nicole Lemanski and the staff at Mable Cheng’s ophthalmology clinic, and highly recommend them to anyone in need of professional attention for careless mishaps such as mine, or for more intensive procedures.
